Marfa Texas – A Town That Forgot the Sky

In this edition of Letters from Lost Cities, we drift through the desert hush of Marfa Texas, where silence bends light and time feels like an unfinished poem.

Letter from Lost Cities: Marfa, Texas – A Town That Forgot the Sky

Dear Stranger,

They say the stars hang lower here, but I think it’s just that Marfa listens. You don’t notice it at first — the hush that slides between the bones of old adobe and art. But if you stand still long enough, the silence begins to hum.

I arrived on a Tuesday. The wind carried nothing but dust and one tumbling paper coffee cup that pirouetted across the road like it had somewhere important to be. The sky? Immense. Almost rude in its honesty. But Marfa looked away — as if it had known the sky once, deeply, then politely declined to mention it again.

The town is stitched with stories too shy to be told aloud. A neon sign buzzes half-heartedly above a diner that hasn’t served a meal since the moon landing. 🙂 An art gallery sits locked but glowing from within, lit by something you can’t photograph.

One night I walked out past the railroad tracks and waited for the Marfa Lights. They didn’t arrive. Or maybe they did and just didn’t need me to see them. Some mysteries keep their dignity by staying quiet.

When I left, the road behind me shimmered — not from heat, but from memory folding itself into the desert. Marfa let me go, gently, the way an unfinished song trails off mid-verse.

If you go to Marfa, Texas, don’t ask the locals about the sky. They’ll just smile, as if it once belonged to them, and they’d rather not explain why they gave it back.

Yours in stillness,
—B
