Explore Key West Through Bob Pardue’s Amazing Photo Shoot

A beautiful structure in the Florida Keys, the Key West Lighthouse pays tribute to the people who once lived in the region. They include these three:

  1. People of Native American descent,
  2. The African-American community,
  3. Key West’s original white settlers.

One of the oldest continuously operating lighthouses in the United States, the lighthouse was built in 1848.

A brief history of Key West’s lighthouse

Built by Isaac Aylsworth for the US Navy in 1848, it is eighty feet high and constructed of limestone. A whale-oil lamp illuminated the lighthouse in 1848. The whale-oil lamp was replaced in 1906 by an electric arc lamp. Then, in 1995 two million candles were installed in as part of a new light system.

The electric arc lamp was used until the 1990s, when the lighthouse was completely renovated and modernized. This included the installation of the two million candlepower light system, which was necessary to increase the visibility of the lighthouse at night.

As the American poet Shannon L. Alder once wrote:

“The moon will guide you through the night with her brightness, but she will always dwell in the darkness, in order to be seen.”

What a magnificent view!

On the top of the lighthouse, visitors can take in the breathtaking view of Key West from the observation gallery. From this vantage point, you can see palm trees swaying in the breeze and blue waters stretching into infinity. Don’t forget your camera and you’ll be able to show your friends about your exciting travels! The neighboring islands of Cuba and Mexico can even be seen on clear days!

Can You Make the Climb?

Enjoy breathtaking panoramic views as you climb the bell house stairs. Don’t forget to keep track of your steps!

Key West visitors are welcome to climb this majestic lighthouse for a memorable experience. And, they experience one of the most beautiful sunset spots in Florida. At the top of the lighthouse, visitors can witness the sun’s rays reflecting off the crystal blue waters below as day turns to night. The winding staircases also provide a unique perspective of the island, as the higher you climb, the more of Key West you can see.

Birds Too!

White-crowned pigeons inhabit low-lying forest habitats with ample fruiting trees. Its distribution in the United States is restricted to:

  • Florida Bay,
  • Biscayne Bay,
  • and the Florida Keys.

Even-though, a few individuals may nest inland in Monroe and Miami-Dade counties (Bancroft and Bowman 2001).

Even in difficult times, you still find beauty, and life will always find its way back to us. In addition to being an impressive photograph, the Key West Lighthouse photo also symbolizes courage and strength. The photo symbolizes that, even in our darkest moments, we can still remain resilient and find ways to move forward.
