How NOT to Become a Successful Model

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Lancaster, SC: Ahhh, the dream of becoming a top fashion model! Just mention modeling to a 14 year old girl and watch her eyes light up! Tell her she has the "look" to become the next Tyra Banks and get a giant smile! Do models reallly get "discovered" by simply walking around in the mall? Most experts say "no".

"There are some fantastic model agencies in most states ... if you know what you are looking for.", says Bob Pardue, fashion model and stock photographer with six years experience. "But, you will also find some talent agents who will sell your soul for a dollar," Pardue claims.

Steer Clear of the Scams

Avoid agencies who ask for large sums of money for so called "training" or to go on a convention cruise. These scouts will shower the young girl (and her parents) with promises of fame and riches if she is chosen but these excursions rarely produce any representation or paying jobs. The model usually ends up no better for the experience and her parents are out thousands of dollars!

It's All an Act

If and when a mom or dad makes an appointment with one of these agencies, they will find themselves in an office filled with lots of other modeling hopefuls. Then the spiel starts. What they thought was a job interview with a talent agency turns into a high-pressure sales pitch for modeling or acting classes, or for "screen tests" or "photo shoots" that can range in price from several hundred to several thousand dollars.

Man, woman, or child -- it makes no difference to bogus model and talent scouts. Often, these scouts are after one thing -- money -- and will say just about anything to get it. But what they say isn't always what they mean so be wary. Just to coin a phrase that is completely weather-beaten; "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

Bob Pardue also remarked, "I have talked to literally hundreds of models who have paid the fees or attended a modeling convention. Not one of the people I spoke with received paying work for their efforts."

It's true that some successful models have been discovered in everyday places like malls, boutiques, clubs, and airports. But the vast majority of would-be models knock on door after door with specific goals in mind before work comes their way.

The final word is to use common sense when contacting talent agents. The best way to find if an agency is on the level is by asking questions and checking references. Using this method will only cost a phone call!
