Getting an early start in modeling takes a lot more than good luck.  If you have a preteen or teen and you think that they would do well in this business then you really have to be organized and prepared. 

There are many modeling opportunities for both young children and teenagers both but first you have to find a modeling agency that will work with you. New York is the top list city when it comes to models. It boasts such names as Tyra Banks, Cindy Crawford, Karolina Kurkova, Adriana Lima, Gisele Bundchen among others. 

Your Modeling Goals Need to be Reasonable

Teenage Girls who are 5'2 and weigh 120 pounds are not going to walk the NYC runway or normally grace the cover of a high fashion magazine. Same with guys, you need to be 5'11". I didn't make this stuff up. These are the requirements for top agents and companies like Elite or Ford in New York.

Which Brings the Question: How Tall Do I Have to be to Model?

For New York agencies and talent management in other cities you don't always have to be a tall woman to model. There are many types of modeling at NY agencies that are for petite and even plus size models. Commercial, catalog and promotional models do not necessarily have to be 6' tall or within the teenage girl group as is the case with the top listing people including high fashion or catwalk agents.

These NY agencies need more of a "normal" or commercial look. You should work on lifestyle posing techniques for your photographers and facial expressions that can sell a product or service in an advertisement or editorial piece.

Practice your posing and look for the camera by using a mirror, or a friend who is a digital camera shutter bug and get your expressions down before going to photo shoots with professional portfolio photographers to create your portfolio of pictures to submit.

What Goes in a Modeling Portfolio?

This is a valid question for young models who are hoping to be represented in New York along with other beginners in the modeling industry. First, know the types of entertainment industry jobs and the requirements of certain agencies.

Modeling types include commercial, high fashion, glamour, artistic, figure, runway or catwalk, body parts modeling, male and female teenagers, plus size, catalog and petite. Hiring a Portfolio Photographer in New York

Now you are ready to hire a photographer and pose for pictures to include in your portfolio. Most professionals in NYC and other areas should know the types of images you'll need to focus on. But, basically, you will need some good headshots, 3/4 lengths, and full length with a variation of poses, outfit changes and styles to show versatility to the agents.

What Pictures Do I Include in My Portfolio?

Essential Photos: Make sure to do a headshot straight on and one in profile with little or no make-up, shot in natural light without flash. The agencies want to see your skin complexion before extensive retouching of photos. If you have lots of scars or a bad case of acne, try to do what it takes to get rid of it.

Now, back to pictures. Also include one image full length either in a swimsuit, bikini or tight fitting sweater and jeans to show off your figure. Books and Composites

How to Get a Model Agency Interview in New York

Word of mouth and knowing someone is always a good way to get that first interview.  Agencies work with both male and female models and doing commercial photo shoots for catalogs and magazines is great entry level work. The agent or director will usually expect you to have a set of photos of your child or teenage model hopeful. 

Quite often they look for that exceptional photogenic quality that goes beyond specific looks.  The teen of child has to be comfortable in front of a camera -- remember, they are super young and this should be fun for them. 

How to Find a New York Modeling Agency

Do your research and don't go with the first talent agencies you come across.  Check out several in your area from the directory above and look at some of the other work they have done and how well they place the models for various work in fashion or other performing arts you are interested in. If possible, get references and talk to some of the people they represent. These NY agents will vary in size, clout and performance for those they hire so do your research before signing a contract.

New York Open Calls for Models

Many NY modeling agencies offer what is known as an open call or cast call for female and males, teenagers and adults to even mature. The agency will set a certain date to offer models the chance to "show their stuff" so to speak. Dress casually and conduct yourself as a professional.

If you have a portfolio, you may be allowed to show it or maybe leave comp cards for the New York agency to keep on file. This first meeting is very important so be on your best behavior when you are interviewed by a talent agent.

Modeling Scams in NY

Unfortunately, the scammers are everywhere, even in New York City! They are waiting to prey on teenagers, male and female who are desperately wanting a career in modeling. They'll tell you that you can walk the New York model runway at 5'0" tall. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

I'm not saying that becoming a super model like Cindy Crawford is impossible. If you are 5'11" tall, a beautiful teen girl with a slim figure and Ford, Next or Elite wants to hire you, this is a big plus. Watch out for those who want large upfront fees to handle you as a model.

A good agent works mostly from commissions earned from modeling jobs they get for you. Check references when possible and never go alone to shoots when you decide to pose for portfolio photographers or to model agency interviews.
