The "Big" Model And Talent Agents

Do you have or know of a Minnesota modeling agency you would like to see included in our models agent directory? Please use the exact format (below) with upper and lower case letters and punctuation... Your MN Model Agency Name - 00998 S. Ave., Minneapolis, MN 55403 (612) 333-6393 E-mail: you@yourname.com Website: www.bobpardue.com |
Maybe it's high fashion, maybe you want to be one of those women modeling in swimsuits or maybe it's commercial print.
Regardless, millions of girls and guys go after Minnesota jobs in the performing arts to display their talents every year. However, are you aware that not every fashion scout is looking for the same thing?
Getting Discovered
Don't hope to be discovered in the mall or on the street corner. Yes, this has happened but it's almost like winning the lottery. Most models go through rigorous steps before they appear on the runway or in top list magazines. In fact, the people in the industry are still practicing, learning new skills, and honing their craft everyday so you need to work extra hard to catch up with these supermodels.
If you haven't already noticed, different talent management companies employ different types of models to create different looks for their campaigns. The big guys like Elite and Ford are especially good at this. And, don't leave out the other giant, IMG Management.
What does this mean? How about that there is no exact norm in this vocation. While some agents in Minnesota will have certain expectations from teenagers in modeling from time to time, that "exceptional look" may not always be the same. So keep this in mind when looking for posing work for MN fashion or glamour photographers.
To refresh your memory, here are a few modeling types--see where you fit in..
- Runway
- High Fashion
- Catalog
- Commercial
- Promotional
- Glamour
- Artistic / Figure
- Body Parts Modeling
Many of these are available on a local level in Minnesota in larger cities such as St Paul but each has its own set of requirements.
The Making of Supermodels
Is there a top list to look at? Well, many claim to have connections but check some references before hiring them to represent you. Minnesota doesn't have the big model management companies like Elite but you can make a nice living going local if you are willing to put in the time and effort.
Know the Requirements before Applying
Top Agencies: Most of these require that you be tall, about 5'9" or taller to walk the catwalk or perform in high fashion like Vogue mag or getting glamour jobs wearing swimwear or the almost impossible job at the Victoria's Secret catalog.
Children in modeling - This is a sensitive area that is usually left to the parents but MN does have some model agencies that represent children's interests. You be the judge as to whether your young child or toddler is a good fit for this industry. Many work in commercials and enjoy it; some don't.
International models -
There is room for Europeans including Italian women, Hispanic and even girls of Russian descent are getting into top model positions. Nationality is not a big factor although the language barrier might present some issues in American cities such as Minneapolis.
The Portfolio of Pictures
With modeling portfolios, there are a couple of choices before you contact the agencies. You might want a formal book with 8x10 or maybe 9x12 photos to show to the director.
Or, another choice of many models is the comp card, aka composite. This is normally a 6x9 card with a headshot on front and 4-5 images on the back along with your stats and contact information. The guys and girls like these "mini" portfolio cards because they can leave them with the MN agencies without a lot of expense.
No matter if you go with the book or composite cards only place your very best photographs in them. Don't make the booking agent sort through medeocre pictures to find the good ones. Make sure your photographer is experienced and knows how a portfolio works along with how to give usage rights to models.
Armed with your portfolio book or comps, start making contacts. Check for open calls or try to set up interviews. Keep an upbeat attitude and make sure you follow all directions for applying to certain agencies. This is especially important if submitting to the top list companies like Elite or Ford.
In summary, if you are a teenager, male or female model looking for talent agencys to work for in Minnesota, check back with this website and search for others online. It's possible to find agents or managers to get you work in the local area.
