Now, it's a given that Ford, Wilhelmina, IMG and Elite Modeling are located in faraway lands such as Miami and New York but you can model locally with a little searching, practicing and contacting.

The Interview - What to Wear

A common question is what to wear to an interview with a modeling agent. No matter if you are in Kentucky or another state the options are about the same.

There are many tips for this but, in a nutshell, wear casual clothing that is not too revealing, never wear see through blouses or skin tight blue jeans. Dress like a professional and you'll be treated more like one. Also, no national logos or distracting (busy) patterns. Keep your clothes simple and let the scout concentrate on your face.

Cosmetics

It's okay to wear some makeup to your modeling agency interview. Just don't overdo it. A simple base and a light coat with a little lip gloss should do the trick.

Types and Requirements

There are many different areas for models to consider. Some are ...

^ Runway or Catwalk - You need to be tall, about 5 foot 9 inches or taller

^ High Fashion - Same here as these are the people you see on the cover of top fashion magazines like Vogue, Seventeen, etc.

^ Teenagers for the above types are many times picked at a super young age of 13 to 15 years and need a slim physique in addition to height.

^ Commercial - This model can be almost any age, color or size. He or she needs an imaginative personality and the ability to present a certain pose or facial expression on demand. Lots of opportunity here.

^ Petite and Plus Size - Just what the label says; mostly catalog or commercial work

These jobs are available for male or female models if qualified but don't just walk in off the street. Make sure you have something to offer as stated below..

Practice Your Poses

If you are a novice and just getting started in KY modeling, you need to get better at your craft before doing poses for photographers. These guys are always time conscious and will not be able to tell you every move and expression.

Do your posing in a vanity or full length mirror until you make some your own. Same goes for facial expressions Do it until you have the look you want. Then you'll be more comfortable when you are ready to create a teenage model portfolio or make open cast calls for Kentucky talent agents.

Believe it or not, this is how superstars like Tyra Banks and Cindi Crawford got started in the industry. They did not just "happen" into teenage modeling by being discovered in the mall. They worked hard to make their mark as a top list female model. If you are a male you need to do the same for your career whether you have your sights set on local performance or a national agency like IMG, Trump or Vision Management.

What Do I Need in a Model Portfolio?

To develop your book, you should include at least a headshot ( one without makeup or very little ), a full length in a tight fitting sweater or swimsuit to show your figure and a few varius poses in 3/4 length featuring high fashion, lifestyle or glamour depending upon the genre of modeling you are interested in . Your portfolio should display only your very best pictures ranging from 8 to 25 images or, if you are not making a 9x12 book, you might consider comp cards also known as a composite to leave with some Kentucky talent agents or to take with you on open cast calls.

What to Wear to a Model Agency Interview

Normally you will wear casual clothes like a nice pair of jeans, a skirt ( not too short ) or dress slacks with a modest top. Avoid skin tight jeans or low necklines. The agency representative doesn't want a free show, he wants to see what you look like, your personality and what talents you can display in your photos. Act professional and you'll be treated as one.
