Many beginner female models just stand
there. I'm sorry, but as a long time portfolio photographer,
I've seen it a hundred times! This doesn't mean they didn't
improve as the shoot went along - not at all.
As a matter of fact, with a little
coaching, many of the girls came away from the studio set
with some awesome pictures. If you are having trouble with
your poses, here is a video showing female model posing with
her hand on her hip. Basic, but effective. Watch
now!
Learn to Pose
If you plan to become a professional
catalog or commercial model, you absolutely must learn some
pose positions and have them at the ready when you show up
for a photo shoot. After all, you are the talent they hired,
aren't you? Posing for photographers is not that difficult -
but it's not as easy as it looks either. That's why this
video, although short, will start you on a course and let
you see how important this stuff is.
Video - Model Pose Tip with Hand on Hip
Why Learn?
Well, as mentioned above, you want to
look and act like a professional and second, no print or
catalog company is going to hire you as a model if you do
your normal standing position in front of the camera.
Modeling
agencies will not send you to
a job if you are poor at posing and most likely will not
keep you on their books if they see no improvement over
time. So, listen closely!!
Get Into Position
First, you need to get into your basic
pose position which is pulling your front heel into your
back toe. This puts you into a professional stance and you
can work from there to get the effect you desire.
Your Hand
Now that you have the standing pose,
take your hand and place it right above the pelvic bone -
you can vary this a bit but use the bone as a guide. Keep
your fingers natural and pointed slightly upward. This will
give them a longer look. To get the idea, look at mannequins
in large department stores - see how long and thin their
fingers look? You can achieve this same position with just a
little practice.
The Elbow Helps
In this model posing position make
sure that your elbow is brought forward. What you will
accomplish here is a sense of broad shoulders and a narrow
waist. And, I know you don't want the opposite.

Learn It Well
No matter what else you do, if you
really want to become
a female model, set up a time
to practice this and other modeling poses daily. Put a
minimum limit such as one hour, two hours, etc. and stick
with it! This is the exact same way that most supermodels
were born!
