Do You Have What It Takes for a Career in Fashion Designing?

If you've spent many days dreaming of a fashion designer career, there are some things you should know before you pursue this field. Well-known fashion designers seem to have a glamorous job with all the perks one could dream of. But in reality, it took a lot of hard work for most designers to get where they are in their career.

By the time a fashion designer hits the spotlight, they've likely completed courses at a fashion design school or college, worked at entry-level jobs in the fashion design industry for a few years, and now have worked their way up through the ranks to get where they are today.

How to Get Started as a Clothing Designer

To determine if you really want to pursue a fashion design career, it's a good idea to work part-time or volunteer with an experienced fashion designer. Check with your local mall and make an appointment to speak with a staff person involved in fashion promotion or show production. Let them know of your interests and ask if you can volunteer your help on their next show or project.

Also, find a local store owner/designer and ask if you can work as an intern. Though volunteer jobs aren't glamorous, this can introduce you to the world of fashion so you can see what’s involved from behind the scenes. There is more to fashion designer careers than meets the eye, so it's good to get a glance at how it really works before moving forward with your education.

Typical Fashion Designer Duties

What does a fashion designer actually do during the day? A fashion designer career consists of staying on the cutting edge of today's fashions without holding on to yesterday's styles. The fashion designer should be able to capitalize on popular opinion and be willing to change at a moment's notice.

Designers also have to know what "has been" in the past and be able to recognize clothing styles as they become popular again.

The tasks of a fashion designer often include monitoring and creating styles of fashion products, choosing and matching materials and colors, attending fashion shows, and working with other designers. Designers should have good communication skills and be able to put an idea on paper (through sketches or samples).

A fashion designer career involves working long hours, a great deal of travel, and being available for special appearances at shows and productions. It might also involve meeting with manufacturing representatives to discuss product sales and production.

Work in a Fashion Designer Career

Designers are needed in all aspects of fashion. Determine what type of field you'd like to work in - women fashion designers, children's clothing, men's fashion, general clothing design, etc.

Once you know the field, you can pursue a fashion designer education through a private school or college.

Getting a college education in fashion will help you learn about the industry and get your foot in the door when applying for jobs. You can attend a two-year or four-year fashion college, a private fashion design training school, or even opt for online fashion design classes.

Type of Fashion Design Degrees

There are several types of college training to choose from in fashion design education. You can earn a certificate, diploma, associate's degree, or a bachelor's degree.

A bachelor's degree requires you to complete four years of college and will give you a well rounded education in liberal arts.

This requires not only fashion design classes, but also general education classes. With an associate's degree, you'll be required to complete two years of classes.

A career in clothing design can be an exciting job opportunity if you've always dreamed of being a fashion designer. Use these tips to move forward with this wonderful endeavor! Now, make that dress!
