About Costume Design For Women and Girl Models
Very few models think about how much goes into costume design. Designing costumes is not for everyone. It is not a simple matter either. You can not just print out a costume and have it look spectacular right off the bat. Many careful adjustments have to be made.
Every aspect of the character's appearance, movement, and features has to be planned out ahead of time. A model often has to be made, adjustments performed, and a new version created. Becoming a costume designer, as a matter of fact, is less a craft than an art. Still, if this field appears to you, persevere! Designing costumes is a more lucrative profession than ever, and it is only going to grow.
I first became aware of costume design in high school. I was kind of a dweeb back then, but my father insisted that I become involved in sports. I took him at his word, and did join the sports team as the school mascot. I actually came in at a pretty fortuitous time.
The old mascot costume was hopelessly out of date. It was falling apart and anyway, the previous mascot had been much smaller than me. They needed a new costume design quickly. Although they were going to do the designing costume work outside of the school, they were going to take ideas from people involved.
We all had a meeting the sports team, the drama department, and anyone else who might conceivably have an interest in mascot costume designs. We submitted our proposal, and sat back and waited.
The costume that came back to us looked nothing like how I had imagined it. Don't get me wrong the costume design firm had done its job pretty well. The problem was, none of us really knew anything about designing a costume. Instead, we gave them broad ideas that they incorporated into the costume design.
It looked more or less like a bee, but it didn't have that whimsical, ironic look to it that we had all envisioned. Somehow, this bothered me more than it did other people. I actually sat up nights thinking about it. Soon, the head of the drama department spoke to me. He told me that, if I was so in to costume designs, I should come work in the drama department.
I could learn set design, lighting, and other related trades. I took him up on that offer, and the rest is history. I have been a costume designer for five years, and I have a whole career ahead of me.
