I have worked with many fashion and commercial models, doing portfolios and other work as a photographer. But, many women and teenagers have asked the question; “What is promo modeling?” so these tips will help answer and show you how to get started in these types of jobs.
What is expected of a promo model?
As a promo model you are hired by a company or through a model agency to promote their product or services. Often times you are asked to hand out free stuff to attract the attention of potential customers.
Why business people use promotional models
Many companies are opting for promo or trade show modeling as a cost-effective way of advertising their products.
Almost any attractive girl or guy with an outgoing personality and the physical ability to stand for long periods would be a good candidate for this type of work. Teenagers would make great promo models because they tend to be good with rejection and are not fearful when it comes to approaching people.
Promotions and trade show modeling is set apart
Promo modeling is different from your traditional runway modeling because the appearance of being a particular size isn’t an issue. With that said, the average female promotional model is around 5’6″ tall but this is not always the case.
They want outgoing personalities
Your positive, upbeat personality is your selling point. Your love for conversation will serve you well in this profession because you are expected to get the product in front of potential customers.
A salesperson?
In one sense, yes. Often times you will be trying to get a person to try a sample or use the product. The logic is once they get a chance to use the product the greater the chance that they will want to purchase it.
Rejection in this field is high but like most retail businesses it is a numbers game and the more people you talk to the more people will be interested in what you have to offer.
Pay rates for promo modeling
Although promotional advertising is about the numbers, you are not paid by commission. So as long as you are out there doing your job you will get paid regardless of if someone makes a purchase or not.
The average pay in trade show modeling or promo modeling is between $12-22 an hour. This field is great for a woman or man and beginners to the job market because it is an easy job.
Model agency scams
Just as in runway, high fashion or other types of modeling, you need to beware of fake ads by companies or agencies looking to hire promo models because some of these ads are really trying to gather names to sell you something or to get you to sign for a contest.
