but that does not mean the school will be educational or even helpful for your career.

Expensive model classes
Unfortunately, it is easy to get trapped into spending extra money for modeling classes that you simply do not need.

For instance, modeling schools are sometimes not legitimate and will tell you that you have a face for modeling even though they are not even considered helpful for starting a modeling career. Depending on what you find, it may actually be harmful to your career.

The model agency play
The myths about schools for modeling abound for a reason. Often talent management agencies double up as a weekly course for the extra income. An agency may tell students to take the class at a certain school because they actually run the outfit.

Learn in front of the mirror – then the camera
Much of what you will learn about how to become a model will come with experience, not from taking classes. Lesson one is that a reputable agent or agency will never ask you to pay for classes. Lesson two is that many of the model schools will offer runway classes but this does not mean they can get you a job as a runway model, especially if you are not at least 5’8″ tall. Teens who want to be runway models work hard to learn the moves and get where they are.

We’re going to make you a star!!!
This is what you hear. Talent scouts and agents that may or may not be legitimate often dazzle new models and the stories of being taken advantage of are numerous. No matter if you live in a small Texas town or NYC, you are not immune from these “advertisers”. Remember, this is your career — take it into your hands and control it from the beginning.

Lesson three is to develop your own portfolio with your own photographer. Starting out you may need to pay a little to have some head-shots done, but it should not be overly expensive. If an agent is trying to get you to pay for a photo shoot, let them know you will have your own done. You do not pay for work that an agent sets up for you, ever.

Study the essentials for new models
Finally, lessons four and five are to educate yourself on what industry professionals expect in a portfolio and which ones are legitimate. If the agency or school cannot give you client and model job references, they are probably just as desperate to sign you, as you are to find work.

Acting class? – Maybe
Lastly, if you are hoping to have a speaking role in some positions, such as commercials, then a few acting classes will be in order. This is also a plus sometimes if you plan on a commercial career where expressions and body language are so important. So, modeling schools can help if you really have trouble getting started as a model. You might even find an experienced model to teach you the ropes for a small fee. Just be sure and collect all the information you can and don’t let yourself get taken!
