Finding The Right Model for Commercial Model Photographers

The Daunting Job of Finding Commercial Photographers Models
All commercial photographers will have a subject for their shoots, most of them will need a model. Finding the right model can be a challenge to even the most seasoned photographer. But, you can lesson the load by using direction and a little common sense.

When a photographer starts to look for the right model for a particular shoot there are several different things that they need to keep in mind. One of the first things that a commercial model photographer needs to do is find out if the client

has any specific requests that need to be met for the campaign you were hired for.

Once they know what the clients requests are they can start looking for the right model for the shoot. Commercial photographers have the option to use either an agency model or an independent model.

Should You Work with Freelance Models or a Modeling Agency?
There are pros and cons to each type of model. If a model is chosen from a reputable commercial modeling agency is chosen you are pretty much guaranteed that a model will show up or the agency will refund the money paid for one. Choosing an independent freelance model is usually cheaper, but you run the risk of the model not showing up for the photo session and being out the money you spent setting up the commercial shoot.

Commercial Model Requirements
Once commercial photographers have chosen which type of model they want to use it is time to get more specific. Unless the client has specified different it is always a good idea to go with a model that is over 5’9″  and with minimal curves if the focus of the shoot is clothing.

Asking other commercial modeling photographers for suggestions is a great way to find male or female models who have experience and are not difficult to work with. Remember, commercial models need to have an outgoing personality and be well versed in posing techniques, giving facial expressions and the ability to work up the body language for different situations during the photo session.

Why Some Commercial Model Photographers Hire Newcomers
Another thing for commercial photographers to keep in mind is that experienced commercial models are not always the best model for the job. Sometimes an inexperienced girl or guy brings originality to a shoot that a experienced model can’t compare to. You might consider a test photo shoot to determine if he or she fits what you need for your client.

Check Closely
Remember, you are dealing with real people in real situations. Just because a girl decides to become a model for whatever reason, this does not always mean she is honest and hard working. Whichever modeling type is chosen a background check should be conducted on all models to make sure there is no substantial criminal background and it’s good to check references for work history for professionals.

Following these suggestions can mean the difference between ending up with a demanding and unprofessional model ( a model – zilla so to speak ) or one that is professional and easy to work with. And, believe me, the latter is much more fun!
