7 Tips for Runway Modeling

Has a model agency contacted you about becoming a runway model, but there’s only one problem? This agency doesn’t teach the skills required for runway modeling. But, don’t let this discourage you if you are really serious about modeling, because you can learn the necessary skills on your own.

 

Below are 7 basic tips that you need to know about this type of modeling.

1. Watch Supermodels

Record a professional runway show and watch it over and over. Pay close attention to the model’s facial expressions and how they walk. Then Practice, Practice, Practice!!!

2. Posture is Important
Practice standing straight up with your shoulders back just like you saw the supermodels stand on the runway show. Keep your shoulders as still as possible while walking.

3. Focusing Eyes
Keep your eyes focused on an object straight ahead of you so you will appear to be looking off into the distance with staring. Be aware of all the bright lights surrounding you, but DO NOT FOCUS directly on them.

4. Chin Up or Down
Some modeling requires keeping your chin up, but since an audience is sitting down and looking up at you during runway shows, you should keep your chin slightly down and your head still.

5. Arm Movement
Female runway models should keep upper arms close to body while swinging lower arm when walking. Males should let arms swing naturally with walk.

6. What to do With Hands
Always keep your hands open and fingers visible. This will make you appear relaxed and also shows you do have fingers, which is important for any photos which might be taken.

7. Walking Technique
While walking down the runway, women should take long strides and walk with one foot in front of the other. This will give the arms the swing needed and the sway of the hips needed for runway modeling. Men should walk natural, but also take longer strides. With plenty of practice and experience, you will eventually develop your own signature walk.

Runway modeling is a great opportunity for you to launch a future career in this thriving industry, so follow these basic tips so you can build up your confidence and do your very best for the designer and their product.
