Learn Your Model Type

Girls who want to get started in modeling careers many times are confused about what they can do to begin. Most believe that you have to walk the runway in New York or Milan as a high fashion model. Nothing could be further from the truth.

This page tells a bit about the requirements, making contacts with female model agencies and general ways to get started if you want to become a model. The industry is tough so don’t stop here. Learn all you can and then take action for better results in your career.

There are many different types of modeling. It’s a given that you will find the supermodels like Tyra or Cindy on the runway of course. And, they will be represented by the top list agencies like Ford, Women Supreme or maybe Elite.

How Tall Do I Need to be to Model?

But, did you know there is a whole world of opportunities waiting if you are willing to do a little research? What if you are not tall and thin? Can you still model? The answer is many times yes, if you study and learn where your look is needed.

Some of these model options are …

  • High Fashion and Runway Female Modeling Careers - These are the top of the list and you need to be 5’8″ for most agencies to consider you
  • Commercial – All body types and looks considered although the average for female fashion models is around 5’6″. Work on facial expressions, attitude and personality
  • Catalog models – For fashion department stores, etc.
  • Body parts modeling  jobs – Hands, feet, legs, fingers, etc.
  • Beauty and cosmetic modeling – Blemish free with good teeth and a great smile
  • Plus size modeling
  • Petite models
  • Promotional modeling career – Not so glamourous but you can make extra money as a male or female model working at trade shows, handing out promotion material at events. Check with your agency to see if they handle event models.

Much more about female modeling careers many girls just don’t know about!

Contacting Female Model Agencies

There is no one way to contacting female model agencies. Each is different. For instance, if you plan to get on the top list and shoot for becoming the next top supermodel like Tyra Banks or Cindy Crawford, the agents in NYC, Milan, Chicago, Los Angeles and Miami are the ticket.

These modeling agencies go by names like IMG, Elite, Ford, Wilhemina and more. They are very strict and the competion is heavy so make sure you have a look comparable to the models shown on their websites before you begin.

For local work as a female model, you still need to be tall for fashion or runway but commercial or promotional modeling is not quite as competitive. For these jobs you need an outstanding personality and certain “commercial” look for advertising services and products. Some female models are quite happy earning a living in a city near them doing what they love to do.

Ask each particular modeling agency what they require and see about open calls and interviews. You just might have the face someone needs for their catalog or industry ad.

Lastly, when you decide to contact female modeling agencies, don’t just try one and quit. Keep making contacts until you’ve exhausted all opportunities. If you have a singleness of purpose, your chance of success in female modeling whether it’s high fashion or commercial has more of a chance.

So, you see? You don’t have to be a 6 foot tall skinny female to become a model. Just look and seize the moment. Practice daily and learn to work with photographers. Go to agency open calls when possible and take care of your skin, hair, body and teeth. All of a sudden you might have an entertainment or modeling career!
