It's a well known fact that, although scouts, agents and promoters of all types try to market their services as the end-all and be-all, by itself, having a talent agency does not guarantee success. No matter whether you are an athlete, a singer, fashion model, an actor, or some other type of entertainer, finding the right professionals to promote and support you is crucial.

Don't get me wrong, there are some truly fantastic talent agents and talent scouts out there, but for every good one, there are probably 3 who will do very little for your career. That is why it is so important to know just what to look for.

Check the Success Rate of Your Talent Agent

The most important thing to look for in a talent agency is a track record of success. A reputable talent agent should be able to point to people who he has helped to succeed in the past. If he is just starting out and has no notable accomplishments, you should consider going with someone with a more proven record. It is worth looking around to find the best agent to represent you.

Specialty Scouts

Another important thing that people often miss when looking at talent agencies is finding one that specializes in their particular area. Although it is rare to find a talent agency that, for example, only handles a particular sport, most agencies do have a focus.

Just because a talent agent has an outstanding track record in promoting female glamour models does not mean that they will do much for your musical career. Every industry is different, so it is important to find someone who is connected to the one you are trying to break into.

If It Sounds Too Good To Be True ....

Finally, it is crucial to trust your instincts. Just because a talent agency has a good track record does not mean that you should go with them. If you do not get along with a talent agent, do not like his promotions, or do not admire at least some of the people he has worked with, consider looking somewhere else.

Really good talent agents are hard to find, so you should not be too hasty, but you should not go against your gut either. If they want to charge you large fees just to represent you, walk away and check with other agencies. Some will promise you the world but their office is a rented motel room. Get the picture?

It is important to not let your talent or model agency do all the work. Just because they are promoting you does not mean that you are off the hook. Chat people up, continue to make logical connections, and always keep your eyes peeled for that big break. After all, no one wants you to succeed more than you do.
