Take Your Model in the Shade

This article will show that model photography than meets the eye. You'll learn why you'll want to wait till an overcast day or at least take your photographers model to the shade before you snap that first photograph. You'll want your photographers model to look her best whether you are shooting outdoor photography or indoor.

You know, I've taken tons of photos of photographers models for my stock lifestyle photography projects and do a fair amount of outdoor model photography.

I know that you may have a blank look when I mention film nowadays in this digital age but some of us will still remember the days when we shot all of our photographers models on Kodak & Fuji film. d:-)

I still cannot get over the directions for taking photos on the yellow Kodak box (not insulting the film giant at all because I love their products).

The instructions for better pictures says (paraphrasing), Put your subject facing the sun with your back to the camera. Allow the sun to position over your left or right shoulder for best results.

Boy!! This is terrific advice if you want your photographers models to squint their eyes in every shot you take (unless you've got a real trooper model with supergirl eyes who can look directly into the sunlight).

There are two possible solutions on how to shoot your photographers model outdoors:

1. Have your photographers model wear sunglasses - This will work for one or two shots but then you begin to wonder if the model has eyes!

2. Simply put your photographers model in the shade - I like this approach because it gives me and the model flexibility while shielding her from the harsh sunlight.

** SIDEBAR ** Shooting your photographers model in a shaded area will also produce better skin tones, especially if you set your digital mode to "shade".

One final thought about shooting your photographers model outdoors; you will now love those cloudy, dreary days; you know, the days when you used to just want to roll over and go back to sleep.

Clouds produce the same results as shade so hop out of that bed, grab your photographers model & camera, then photograph your model as long as the day lasts the next time the weather woman pouts and announces "another cloudy, depressing day today!".
