When you are ready to search for a modeling agency there are certain things you need to know before you start. Going through the phone book and sending out a hundred headshot pictures won't work. Here are some tips for what might work for you in finding a model agent.

How to Find a Model Agency That Works for You

Looking for a Talent Agent

Many guys and girls dream of breaking into the glamour that is the life of modeling. However, before you start posing for photographers or get any type jobs in the industry, you need to have a model agency to represent you.

A good modeling agency is going to find you work and help you manage your career. Finding reputable agents can be a challenging task.

The Top List

Of course, most modeling candidates have heard of Ford Model Management, but the chances of getting on with Ford, IMG or other top of the list companies in the beginning are minimal. You might have to lower your sites a little and look locally.

Researching

Tips on how to find a model agency include first and foremost, research. The last thing you want to do is mail out head shots to every modeling representative in the phone book. This method will get your face out there, but more than likely will just waste your time by sending it to the wrong kind of agencies.

When you begin doing your research, you want to find out what kind of clients the agency has in their listings. You want to find out what type of models they primarily represent. Some agencies represent all males or all females. Perhaps they represent the children or preteen models.

Simply call up some talent agents that you found in the phone book and ask them who they primarily represent and what their method of screening actually is. While some may host an open casting call, others may have an interview date available for you.

Remember--They Represent You Too!

When looking for a modeling agency, you are hiring them just as they are hiring you. Remember that you have criteria too, expectations that you need met just as they do.

What to Look For in a Modeling Agency and How They Operate

Look for a company that has a full-time staff. They should have an office that can allow for clients to visit it and a phone that is manned at all times.

The modeling agency business is divided into two parts, the booking and the managers....

Managerial: The managers part should be able to help you develop your marketing materials like your photographer's portfolio and completing your look. They should be brutally honest with you and be able to tell you what market can utilize your look.

Bookings Department: The booking part of the agency is the one who will be hunting down modeling jobs for you. You want one who is organized, competent and motivated. With the right representation, you'll go far, just make sure it's quality you're finding.

Online Search

Another way to find agencies to represent you in modeling is by doing a search online. You can many times find directories of modeling agents by state or area along with websites so you can study their requirements and availability for open calls, etc. Watch for scams and those talent scouts who promise you the moon before you even apply. If they ask for upfront money, it's normally best to walk away and resume your search.

Use some common sense when you look for a model agency and maybe you'll be called back to work in the industry. It takes time, practice and commitment but it can be done. Don't give up too soon!
