To Learn to
Model - Know the Options
Females and males alike who are
interested in how to become a model will enjoy
reading this short class of material about getting into the
modeling profession.
Maybe you have been told before that
you'd make a good model or perhaps people have been telling
you all your life what a pretty face you have. Now, you're
wondering how exactly does one learn how
to become a model? To begin
your modeling career, you first need to decide what aspect
of modeling you would most like to pursue.
3 Modeling Types (Which are
You?)
The three basic types of models can be
summed up as commercial, fashion and specialty. Let's dive
in and find out more about each category. This is where you
can shine if you do it right!
Become a Commercial
Model
The description of commercial
modeling is one that
represents various companies in print advertising. There is
margin in sizing here and more variety in the types of
models needed. A girl need not be rail thin and tall to be a
commercial model.

(High) Fashion Modeling &
Runway
Talent agencies represent all kinds of
sizes. However, as a female fashion model, one usually must
be very thin and tall, over 5'8". These are the models you
see on the runways of Milan and New York and on the covers
of the magazines. While most women dream of this type of
modeling, it's actually the smallest percentage of working
models.
Which brings us to ...
Specialty Models
The last category is specialty
modeling and it represents people who bring something
different or unique to the table. These models may have
great hands, feet or even teeth that are profiled by
specialty products. They often times have an outstanding
personality or "acting" ability.
They may also be more mature, older
models (baby boomers), plus-sized or petite models who
answer specific calls. To get jobs in this area calls for
lots of talent and maybe an acting class or two wouldn't be
such a bad idea.
The Avenue to a Modeling
Career
As a beginner, there are important
steps one should take to start in modeling. You should have
model-quality, professional photographs made, seek out an
agent and attend open cast calls. You should post quality
color photographs of various length and ranges on a website
for potential clients to view. It doesn't have to be an
expensive site, but simply a free site that can showcase
your various looks.
A Portfolio
I know - many in modeling will tell
you not to invest a dime in your quest to begin your career
but, I've constantly said - "a good picture is better than a
bad one!" But, let's say you are completely tapped out money
wise. Then, just a really good head shot and one full length
by a professional photographer can get you started. You
certainly don't want to show an agency a snapshot that is
completely out of focus with poor posing and composition. At
least appear professional even if you are a complete
beginner.
What Pictures to
Include
Notwithstanding the statement above,
if you can afford it, order 8x10 or 9x12 shots of yourself
to keep in a leather portfolio book that you can show
potential clients or agents you meet with. Additionally,
many have comp cards printed up, kind of like a business
card for models with a couple of their best shots and all
their particulars on the back. These cards are very
inexpensive so you can order lots of them to leave with the
agencies to keep on file.

Lastly - Dreaming Vs.
Doing
There is a lot for a girl to do in
order to start a male or female model career, but wishing
and hoping doesn't make it happen. It's rare that an agency
or company will simply "discover" new talent by accident.
One must be actively promoting themselves in most cases in
order to become a successful and continually working model.
The other girls are doing it so why shouldn't you?
